Dynamic and immediate paintings on paper by master screen printer Arthur Buxton.
Dr Brian Edwards is a retired architect and Professor Emeritus at Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh University. His paintings explore the interface between architecture and art.
The materiality of buildings and their structure are his primary interest, expressed often through vibrant colours and dramatic affects of light. As an architect raised on Bauhaus modernism, the paintings whether of steam locomotives or historic buildings, seek a degree of drama and abstraction. His most recent painting on display Dungeness Nuclear Power Station) inspired by the recent film The Brutalist. Here, a painting of the landscape of alienation seeks to capture our modern world in electric colours.
Besides painting Brian is an avid sketcher. His book ‘Understanding Architecture through Drawing’ explores the interface between drawing and creativity. The works on display start as sketches and grow into paintings. Much is invented en route and much removed so the final paintings have an entity removed from tedious reality.
